Christmas Eve Eve

If it's the evening before Christmas Eve, than that's Christmas Eve Eve, right?

This has been a grandkids kind of day. We were surpised to get a package in the mail from Lee today with a framed photo montage. Very nice! Good pictures of the grandkids, and Dave and Debra, and they even managed to sneak one in of me and Jess from when we were down there at Thanksgiving.

Then I checked with Richard and Chrystie today via email to see if they would have any time for a Skype call on Christmas... turns out the next couple of days will be busy (no surprise!), but today they were having a quiet sort of day, so we chatted this evening.

Ellie had BIG NEWS. She lost a tooth! See, Southern Grandma!

I didn't hit the button quick enough to get her showing me the gap where her tooth used to be!

And furthermore, she got a car from a friend for her Zhu Zhu pet. and she lost a tooth! And she's going to the movie theater for the first time to see Rapunzel. and she lost a tooth! And she has a stuffy nose. and she lost a tooth! and Santa is going to come and leave some presents. And the Good Fairy came and left a Toonie, cause guess what.... she lost a tooth!

One week until Florida! Again!

Wow, I'm just a traveling maniac these days. (As usual, no comments please!)

For the second time this spring, I'm headed to Florida one week from today. This is a combination fun and business trip. Fun because I get to see the kids and how Ellie is progressing while I'm there. Business because I have a 3-day seminar to attend.

Of course, Richard, Chrystie and Ellie are getting company from the far north too. And one of those times they went to Disney World. From all accounts, Ellie loved Cinderella's Castle!


I thought it was pretty cool too, but it's been years since I was there! (Like when the boys were in grade school! I believe Richard has grown a bit since then, ha, ha!)

Anyway, it's over to Chattanooga in one week to fly out on Allegiant. Wouldn't you know that in May they're supposed to start cheap, direct air flights to Orlando out of Huntsville. Too late for this year, but maybe it'll help the next time Jess or I want to fly to Florida.

In the meantime, we'll be heading down there again in April. This time Jess and I will drive down, and Randy will be down there at the same time, so we ought to have a great time visiting family.

Too bad we don't have that much family in one place more often.

One Short Trip!

Last week I was in Florida for a short time. I wanted to go down and see Ellie with my own two eyes and check out how she was doing after her surgery. And of course, that meant I got to see Richard and Chrystie also!

There are 3 bedrooms on the 3rd floor of the townhouse they're renting. From the room I was staying in, I could walk out on the balcony and see the clubhouse and pool area. It looked pretty neat at night.

One day we walked over there to check it out. It's a long jaunt for Ellie, but she does well! Sometimes she likes someone to walk beside her though, and this time she wanted her Dad.


Ellie has a little toy computer she loves to play on. She liked for me to sit beside her and type on my laptop while she typed on hers. She would tell me to type her name, or Daddy or Mommy.

One day Richard got a picture of us playing. It's one of those weird and wonderful pictures!

You know, I'm weird, Ellie's wonderful!

It was brief, but fun to see them. I'll be going back in a few weeks since I have a seminar to attend in Orlando in March, then Jess and I are driving down in April to see both them and the Sanfords and Randy too.

A Brief Visit

I'm here visiting Richard, Chrystie & Ellie. A *short* visit, but time enough to see how Ellie is doing at home and at therapy.

Ellie is using her walker and getting around really well. I tried taking a video of her outside this morning, but I goofed up and the video didn't shut off but kept going and going... so lots of sidewalk and shoes... I don't think I'll upload that one.

And we can't take pictures in therapy, so just going to have to go with a couple of still shots from her morning stroll outside this morning.

I think she's doing super to have just had major surgery 3 weeks ago this past Tuesday.

And her incision is all healed up and just a thin little scar. Amazing!

And now that she's seen for herself, Grandma feels better too. :-)

I've posted about her surgery on Rural Ramblings also. So I'm not going to say more here, except to say my heart aches for her and her parents. I remember what it was like after a lumbar laminectomy. Ellie's surgery was far more extensive. Ouch is an understatement.

Besides posting on the aforementioned couple of blogs, I have 5 others I post to every day. And that's only half the day's online work. In-between I do critter chores, cooking, laundry, and whatever else needs done around here.

For the occasional entertainment, I sometimes turn on the tv! I watch Castle on Monday night, NCIS on Tuesday night, and CSI on Thursday night. That's it.

I read too, but mostly it's work-related.

This is my make it or break it year. The year to spend lots and lots of time building my online real estate, so I can get some rent coming in. It's going to be a more-than-ever hard-working kind of year, but the results will be worth it.

But for now, I'm just trying to keep up.

One Week From Today. . .

By this time next week, Ellie should be through with her surgery. Hopefully this is the first step toward her first steps without a walker.



But it’s a long haul. Tomorrow Chrystie and her mom are flying with Ellie to Vancouver. Pre-op testing and doctor visits begin later this week.

Richard will fly out to Vancouver before Ellie’s surgery date.

Please keep them all in your prayers for all the traveling, stress, and most of all, for Ellie’s surgery to go super well.

What An Imagination!

Yesterday I had a Skype call with Richard and Ellie. When we first tried Skype, Ellie wasn't too sure about her "Sussern Mama" showing up on her Dad's computer and talking to her. She was pretty shy and it would take a long time for her to warm up and get going.

I'd say those days are pretty well over. Now it doesn't take long for Ellie to start talking and telling me about what's happening in her life.

She had a new toy camera to show me yesterday, and a new Sesame Street sort of dolly, Abby. She had her dad set Abby up beside the computer screen so she'd be "sitting by Sussern Mama", and then she proceeded to tell me to "Say Cheese" and took a picture of me and Abby.

Then she had to show me how she drives, and told me that she and Abby drove to the store not once, but THREE times, and Abby drove home because Ellie was tired, and they bought lots of Play-doh. In fact, they bought so much Play-doh that Ellie had plenty to send to me and Sussern Grandpa and Uncle Geek as presents.

She does this with one of her imaginative games of throwing a present. Richard and Chrystie have no idea how she came up with this game, just one day she started giving out presents! When we're doing the Skype thing, it works with the present going right through their webcam and in and out of my webcam into my waiting hands.

"Open it!" commands Ellie.
"What is it?" says I.
And then it's Play-Doh, or food, or toys or any number of things!

Like I said, what an imagination! I smile and laugh a lot at her stories.

It sounds like she had a good Christmas time, with being in a play at school and at church, and playing with her friends and relatives, and generally enjoying Christmas.

That's the upside of her surgery being postponed. Since her surgery is now scheduled for January 26, 2010, she was able to do all the Christmas stuff. If it had remained January 5th, her Christmas activities and visiting would have beeen curtailed in an effort to be sure she didn't catch any "bug" before surgery.

And from what Chrystie says, all the arrangments are in place again for flying to Vancouver, the surgery, home and then down to Florida for Ellie to have therapy.

After that, we hopefully won't need an imagination to see Ellie walking much better!

Think These Little Girls Are Related?

So what do you think? Do these little girls look related? I'm sure I'm more than a tad biased, but I think they do!

Of course, the right half of the picture is a recent vintage photo of our sweet Miss Ellie. But once in a while I see a picture of her, and it reminds me of another little girl from long, LONG ago (okay, you can quit snickering and making wisecracks about the Stone Age).

Cause yeah, the little girl in the left half of the photo is Ellie's Grandma. Both photos taken at around 4-years of age.

Put a pair of glasses on one little girl, and bangs on the other, and I think they'd look even more alike.

And I think that's pretty cool.

New And Improved!

Tonight's class just finished up. I listened/watched it on my laptop. ON. MY. LAPTOP!!!! I made Jess come and look, cause it was just AWESOME. The clarity of the picture was tack sharp wonderful, with full, vibrant colors. And the sound was right on, with that Aussie accent sounding like he was right here in the living room with me. There was no delay; no time lag. It was just so freakin' cool. I've NEVER been able to attend a webinar on my laptop before.

Of course, this is on my NEW AND IMPROVED laptop! Brand new! Improved a zillion fold! Okay, that might be a tad bit of an exaggeration, but seriously, it's like going from an old Atari to a Ninendo Wii. From little stick figure gunfighters shooting at each other to 3-D in your face real looking soldiers blowing stuff up.

This will be so nice. It's going to be a big help to me not to be tied to the desktop computer for all the intense graphics work, or webinars. To be able to lean back on the couch and use my computer here is a real blessing. It should help me work a little longer, because the chronic pain will only allow me to sit in an office chair for so long. And it's not long enough.

Of course, my desktop is still the hub, being a major storage center. It has a 2nd internal drive Richard installed for me, plus an external hard drive that is now filled up, so I have a new external hard drive ready to hook up and start acting as a back-up.

Yes folks, that means I now have 4 hard drives. The internal drive that came on my desktop is used for programs and My Documents. The second internal drive is for photography. The first external drive was for back-up, and the second external drive will pick up where that one left off.

What can I say? Pictures take a lot of space.

Also NEW AND IMPROVED this year - I have calendars done! I think this is the first time I've finished them before Thanksgiving. I wanted to have plenty of time for people to order, so we will hopefully get more orders.

Not only is the timing new and improved, but there are more calendars to choose from! I finished the big Ellie calendar first, which is mostly for family. Then I did a smaller, desktop version that is more suited to selling as a fundraiser. Considering we get about the same amount of profit from the big ones vs. the small ones, and the big ones are $30 vs $12 for the desktop size . . . well, I think most people are more apt to go for the cheaper calendar.

But wait! I said NEW AND IMPROVED means MORE calendars, so besides the Ellie version, there are two more! One has flower photos on the pages, and the other has pictures of critters from around the farm.

Don't let the names throw you; the profits still go to the Ellie surgery fund. Because in case you missed reading/hearing about it from one of us, or on Facebook, or on some of the other family blogs, Ellie is having surgery January 5th, getting the SDR (Selective Dorsal Rhizotomy). They have to travel to Vancouver, B.C. for that, clear over on the west coast of Canada.

Then it's down to the Orlando, Florida, area so Ellie can go to the recommended place for daily therapy for 4 months. Fortunately, since Richard can telecommute, he can work from there. (Chrystie is still working out details to see about her job.) But that means renting a house down there and more expenses.

So while we're hoping this will mean a NEW AND IMPROVED walking status for Ellie, it's obviously going to be costly. Which is why I wanted to get calendars done sooner. Although I know those sales are not likely to come close to covering all the expenses, I figure every little bit helps.

Well, guess that's all my news for now. Let me cruise a little on the internet with my NEW AND IMPROVED computer (it's got a backlit keyboard! It has a Soundblaster sound system! It's got a big, bright screen! It's . . . awesome.)

My Laptop Is Coming!

It's another rainy day here, with all the extra pain that entails, but today I just don't care. I got an email this morning saying my laptop has shipped! In fact, they estimate it to arrive . . . (drum roll please!). . . TOMORROW!!! Wow!

The little netbook is still "in production", but that's okay. I can wait for it, but I'm in desperate need of a laptop! I wiggled and jiggled and tried to get those wires to connect to power my old laptop all weekend without success. I just hope I can get enough juice to it at some point to make sure I've got any data I need off there.

Fortunately, I don't think there's much on it that isn't already backed up to one of the hard drives connected to my desktop computer. I did periodic back ups of "My Documents" from the laptop but it's been a while.

Today I hope to finish up all the calendar stuff. I got the big Ellie calendars done and ordered copies for the Great-Grandpas and us yesterday. It was the last day of their 25% off sale. Even better, I got another 18% off for a multiple sale. Even with the cost of shipping and handling included, the price per calendar was only $16.25 - which I think is decent for such a huge calendar.

I've also got a smaller desktop calendar done with Ellie pics, plus one of flowers, and plan to finish up the one with farm critters today.

Of course, I also need to do some snail mail today. So I've got a lot to get done and the morning is pretty well shot. I'd better get with it, cause I need to get back to work tomorrow!

Updates, Skype & Laptops

Well, it’s sure been a while since I’ve written. I hardly know where to begin. Guess it’s a time for a quick “summing up” of what everyone’s been doing.

The guys have been busy at work. Jonathan works pretty much full time, which is good. And since we’ve been back home from vacation, Jess has had a good bit of work, so no time to employ a lot of his “time users”! He’s got some work for tomorrow, but after that, he may be idle. Or he may get lots of work again. He just never knows.

As for me, it's the usual madhouse of housework and farm stuff, with school and internet work thrown in. Right now I've got "classes" Tuesday and Thursday evenings, and again on Saturday morning. Homework and regular work in-between.

Then it’s been raining and cooler here. The cooler part I like. The rain is a different matter. Like today . . . I felt fine this morning, though I slept in late this morning. However, by the time Jonathan and I finished grocery shopping and home again, I was done in. Jonathan carried in all the groceries while I put them away, we all had lunch, and then I napped. I seem to have a lot less stamina and a lot more pain during rainy weather.

But there was some pretty FUN stuff going on today!! For one thing, I had a Skype call with Richard and Ellie. She was in a silly mood, bouncing around like kids do sometimes, and didn’t want to talk. I went and got the two little orphaned chicks I have inside and showed them to her. Wow! She was instantly still. I’m not sure she knew quite what to make of these little peeping critters.

Then we got into the “I’ve got a present!” game, and she was sending me imaginary presents . . . I got an apple and toys and cookies and Lego’s. And she sent Sussern Papa a toy car, and Uncle Geek got some Lego’s. What an imagination she has!

Other happenings, well, my laptop is dying. It’s actually been on the way out for some time but I keep babying it along. The last couple of years I’ve replaced parts of the LED display, upgraded the RAM from 256mb to 512mb, and other things. But it’s so slow, has more problems, and only has a 30GB hard drive.

Of course, I’ve had this computer for 6 years! Which I think is pretty good for a laptop and the way it’s been bounced around in airports and on car trips. But it’s got a puny processor and is just all over puny compared to today’s systems. In 6 years, computer technology has come a long way baby! (Yeah, I tried seeing how much I could get for this computer on a trade-in, and the best I could find was $84.)

The latest problem is the laptop won't stay connected to power. I’ve already replaced the power cord once, and I think the problem is actually the wiring on the inside. I have to jiggle the wires trying to get it just right so the power connects, then make sure I don’t move the laptop . . . which kind of defeats the purpose of a laptop!

I’d decided to get a little netbook to tide me over, because I wanted to wait to get a laptop until I was making more money and could get a really nice one since I use it a lot. (I can’t stay sitting in a chair at the desktop for extended periods of time.) And I figured a netbook would sure be nice when we’re traveling – especially flying somewhere. Soooo much easier to carry around since they only weigh 2 1/2 pounds as compared to my heavy old notebook.

But then Jonathan showed me a flyer he got from Dell. Oh my. There they had this uber laptop on sale which included a little netbook with it. This little netbook has 1GB RAM and 160GB hard drive compared to the 512MB RAM and 30GB hard drive on my present laptop. Oh my indeed! What clinched the deal is the fact I could get both for less than the normal retail price of the laptop, and have a year to pay them off WITHOUT interest.

Sweet.

To make a long story shorter, after days of looking over these laptops, getting technical advice from Jonathan and Richard, and a “Merry Christmas/Happy Birthday” from Jess. . . this evening I ordered a new laptop.

I AM SOOOOOO EXCITED!!!!

Of course, for a while this evening I wasn’t sure the deal was going to go through. To get the 12-month deal, you have to get approved for their credit, and it popped right up that we were, but after I placed the order, I got an email saying it was on hold because they couldn’t get the approval from the credit department and to call them.

I tried. I listened to elevator music for 45 minutes until the battery on my phone died.

Then I tried again on a different phone. After a while I actually got someone, and she said, “Let me look up the order,” and. . . the phone went dead.

So I tried once more, and fortunately, 3 times was a charm. I got through, she looked it up, and turns out they just needed to call me back at our home phone number and verify the order. We hung up, she called and asked if it was me (it was), and if I’d ordered a new laptop for such and such an amount (I had), and that was it. Mission accomplished.

I asked her if they did this because of the previous problems we had with someone using my credit card to buy stuff, and she said this was just routine. That’s great with me! They ought to do it for ALL purchases, not just the ones using their credit line. Then some idiot wouldn’t have been able to spend over $700 buying MP3 players using my name and stolen credit card info.

Other news! It turns out our traveling isn’t over, and we’re headed to Florida over Thanksgiving to visit the Sanfords, and Randy will be there too, so it should be a great visit. We always have a lot of fun there.

Well, it’s getting late, and the bird needs covered up and put to bed, so I’d better finish this up. Maybe I’ll actually get back on here sooner next time.

Cuteness Overload

Richard posted a couple of really cute videos of Ellie on Facebook. Since they are soooooooo good, I asked him if he'd fix it so I could put them on my blog. Being the good son that he is, he fixed them right up for me. :-)



He assures me that Ellie had no prompting and came up with her destination all on her own! Go Ellie! Drive that car right on down to Southern Mamaw's house!

She's also going to see Southern Papa!



And of course, she also tells Southern Papa she loves him!

Yep, cuteness overload. I love it!

I LOVE To Get Goodies In The Mail!

Saturday there was an unexpected surprise in our mailbox.

It came in one of those big padded envelopes. Inside, there was some rather ingenious packaging.

Considering how brutally the USPS has treated some previous packages from the Canadian contingent, it was probably a wise precaution.

At any rate, this time the contents arrived in pristine condition.

What fun! You can't beat a surprise package with pictures! (Well, maybe a surprise package with a check for a whole lot of money would trump the pictures. . . )

At any rate, this Grandma loves pictures! (And so does Grandpa! And Uncle Geek!)

Cookie Monster & Tricycles & Pizza

No, Cookie Monster isn't riding a tricycle while eating pizza. As a matter of fact, this particular Cookie Monster and his cookies got eaten. Nice twist, huh?
That Richard really got creative with Ellie's birthday cakes this year! Not only did he make a fantastic Oscar The Grouch cake for the big family party they had a while back, but he made this cute Cookie Monster cake for the smaller party they had this past weekend.

The secret behind this cake? It's made using a 3-D panda bear cake pan, a couple of cupcakes and of course, cookies for props! That pan has seen a lot of use through the years! It was a panda bear for Richard's first birthday in it's original incarnation, then got reincarnated as a Care Bear at various times for Richard, Jonathan and some special friends. Now here it is again, as a terrific Cookie Monster!

As for the tricycle part of this post's title, here's a picture Richard sent me of Ellie riding her tricycle. It got warm enough in the north land for them to go for a walk this past Sunday. (Of course, you realize "warm" is a relative term, and what I'd call warm and what they call warm are two totally different things!)

Richard mentioned that he had to adjust the tricycle because Ellie has grown so much.

Now, as for the pizza part of the title! Jonathan is now working next-to-full-time delivering pizza at Domino's Pizza. He can make more money delivering pizza than he could working a retail job, so there he is. In fact, he informed me last night when he came home that he'd made as much money in 2 days as it usually took him 30 hours to make at Toys R Us.

Oh, the irony... for the longest he didn't want to do pizza delivery because of the wear and tear on the car. However, Domino's has a policy of NO SPEEDING, and in fact, if you get a speeding ticket while delivering pizza, you get suspended. The last time he worked at pizza delivery they were pushing him to "speed up" so he could make faster deliveries (which ultimately led to driving a little too fast on a rain-slicked road over a mountain and wrecking and totaling his car). He'll still put the miles on the vehicle, but this store also doesn't have as big a delivery area as the last place he worked, so that will help, too.

So there we have it, some of life's blessings - Cookie Monster birthday cakes, Ellie riding a tricycle, and Jonathan delivering pizza. Sweet!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY ELLIE!

WOW, Ellie is FOUR YEARS OLD today!!! She's not a little baby anymore. She's not even a toddler anymore. She's just a really cute little girl!

It's hard to believe that four years ago, she was such a tiny little thing.

And she was a little over 6 weeks old when I took this picture, so she'd grown some already!

Of course, you can see where this is going... now we need to see a picture of her at one-year old!

At least, she was mighty close to the official 4-year mark when this picture was taken, since it was just a few weeks ago when they were visiting.

Ellie is one special little girl. I wish we lived closer, but that's the way it goes in today's world! I know she has a super grandma were she lives, and lots of other fun family. (But I still miss her and her parents of course!)

Prayer and Praise

As always, there's a lot going on with our family. I couldn't begin to make a list of everything happening with the extended family. For instance, we have a niece who is pregnant again, a divorce in the works, another niece that's getting married, a nephew with knee problems, a... well, you get the picture. Once again, I'm going to zoom in on just the immediate family and hit the major stuff.

• Ellie and all her therapies. She also just got new glasses, and we're praying they help her see better!


• Dave is looking for a different line of work. He wants to find something that takes less physical labor.


• Jonathan has a job interview Tuesday morning.

• Jonathan has one job for sure, doing delivery for Domino's Pizza. But he also has a job interview Tuesday morning for what might be an even better job!


• Jess has almost more work than he can handle right now. In fact, here it is Saturday, and he's working at the office. (Maybe just space those jobs out a little please?)


• Ellie is going to be FOUR YEARS OLD tomorrow!


• Randy is coming to visit soon!


• Ryan has a scholarship to play football at Lenoir-Rhyne University in Hickory, NC next year as safety. Way to go Ryan!

In one of those funny little quirks of life, we almost ended up in Hickory when we moved from Cleveland. In fact, we were house hunting before a last minute change sent us to Alabama instead.

All things considered, we could spend a lot more time counting our blessings and have much to be thankful for!

Vivid Colors!

May I present Ellie in VIVID COLOR!

Remember back when I was talking about some color in MY life? Well, here's the gorgeous hat and scarf set my friend, Sharron, crocheted for me for my birthday.

While the kids were visiting, I decided to let Ellie model the set. When I tried it on, Jonathan said I looked like a bag lady. I believe that Ellie, however, carries off those bright colors with a certain panache. I mean, just look at this face!

Okay, even if you don't believe it's elegant, you must agree the model is fabulous, and the hat and scarf set is fun and... well, BRIGHT!

Too Quiet On The Home Front

The house is a whole lot quieter now. I miss the extra noise.

I miss the “Sussern mama, read to me!”

I miss having Richard, Chrystie, and Ellie around. We had such a great visit, at least I think we did. It’s just too bad we can’t visit more often. It’s just amazing how much Ellie had grown and progressed in the short time since we’d last seen them.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, it’s a real bummer our family is strung from Florida, to Tennessee, to West Virginia, to Canada!

Ellie has a new walker, and boy! It's making it easier for her. She walks down a hallway every morning for practice.

She's really made some great progress!

It will be interesting to see what they say at Shriner's Hospital later this week though. The doctors have said her hip is moving out of joint, so putting it back in place might make it easier for Ellie to walk. But it's 6 or 8 weeks in a cast after surgery, so no small thing.

Whatever Ellie does, she has to work harder than most to accomplish it because of the Cerebral Palsy. I'm really proud of how well she's doing!

Happy Valentine's Day!

Last night Jess and I went to our favorite Mexican restaurant and enjoyed some yummy food. He brought home some flowers and candy and a card, so guess he's earned some brownie points, huh?

Right now he's on his way to the Huntsville Airport to pick up Richard, Chrystie and Ellie. They're going to have a nice shock weather wise. It's 7 degrees where they live today, and 61 degrees here. Wow! Viva la difference!

The sun does look mighty good out there. It was rainy and gloomy this morning, but now it's a sparkling day.

I've got a chicken in the crock pot, so supper is started, I've done all the cleaning I planned on doing, and I've got clean sheets on beds. We're ready! (Or at least as ready as we'll ever be, ha, ha.)

We even went up to Walmart this morning and bought a new car seat for Ellie. Richard called from Minneapolis and said they'd forgot to get the carseat out of the car, and would I go buy a cheap one and they'd pay me back.

Jonathan and I went up and found one that looked decent. It will adjust for kids up to 100 pounds, so ought to work for a long, long time, considering Ellie only weighs somewhere between 30 and 35 pounds right now. It's got a nice zippered bag we can store it in, and just pop it in the basement between visits. So now they will have one less thing to cart around the airport when they come to see us!

They're in flight from Memphis, and looks like they didn't have any major flight delays any where this time. Always a plus.
